The Salzburg writer Helena Adler has the chance to win a major award. The author, who lives in Oberndorf (Flachgau), was selected for the longlist of the Austrian Book Prize 2022 with her novel “Fretten”. There are other nominees.
A second novel by the Salzburg publishing house Jung und Jung made it onto the shortlist of debuts: “Maremma” by Anna Maria Stadler, who also lives in Salzburg. The book prize is endowed with 20,000 euros, the debut prize with 10,000. Both will be awarded on November 21st.
Among the ten books that are in the running for the Austrian Book Prize this year is the autobiographically colored prose volume “Girls” by Teresa Präauer – published by Wallstein Verlag. Born in Linz, she grew up in St. Johann im Pongau and now lives in Vienna.
Preliminary decision on October 11th
The current books were nominated by local bestselling authors such as Robert Menasse or Monika Helfer. By October 11, it will be decided which five finalists still have a chance of winning the Austrian Book Prize and thus the prize money of 20,000 euros.
The book prize is organized by the Federal Ministry of Art and Culture, the Main Association of the Austrian Book Trade and the Vienna Chamber of Labour.
