Qatar could soon take over the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council
Hanover. The desert state of Qatar could take over the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council in the future. This comes from a request from the non-governmental organization UN clock to Federico Villegas, the president of the panel, to reject Qatar’s candidacy. He would have to “put an end to the absurd spectacle that oppressive regimes are given high positions in the United Nations bodies dealing with human rights and democracy”.

In addition to Qatar, the Bahamas and Togo compete for the presidency. According to UN Watch, however, it is almost certain that the desert state will push through its candidacy. The appointment by President Villegas will therefore take place next week. Qatar, already a member of the Human Rights Council, has nominated Hend Abdalrahman Al-Muftah, currently Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, for the chair.

The country, which is hosting the World Cup this year, has been repeatedly criticized for systematic human rights violations and the exploitation of migrant workers. The government has denied the allegations and is citing pro-worker reforms. The soccer World Cup starts on November 20th and runs until December 18th.
The UN Human Rights Council is a Geneva-based subsidiary of the General Assembly, established in 2006 as the successor to the UN Human Rights Commission. It has 47 member states, each elected for three-year terms.
