MOTELX, in Lisbon: After all, there is a terror english
Does the convent, by Manoel de Oliveira, can it be considered a horror film? At the 16th edition, MOTELX finally managed to make Portuguese cinema the main theme. But, of course, some security is needed in the gender classification criteria.
If this film by Oliveira, which deals with mystery and the supernatural (as also happens with his The Strange Case of Angelica), is one of the most surprising is cards, the festival full of other good surprises. One of the great highlights is the premiere of My Grandfather’s Demons, by Nuno Beato. It is the first Portuguese stop motion animated feature film and, in fact, plays with the supernatural imaginary of popular tradition, as well as Bad thingby Tiago Guedes and Frederico Serra, another of the revisited films.

Still in the field of Portuguese cinema, MOTELX travels further back, with the help of Cinemateca, to project The Crimes of Diogo Alves1911, directed by João Tavares (with the soundtrack, created by Bernardo Sassetti, to be performed live), and The Mountain Faun, by Manuel Luís Vieira, cineconcert inserted in the Warm-Up section, with live music played by the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa. Everything national is beyond the short film competition, in increasing quality.
Among the international news, there is also a lot to say. Natural highlight for SunglassesHmm giallo contemporary of Dario Argento; final cutby Michel Hazanavicius, a French remake of Japanese a cut of the deadzombie film that was at the opening of the Cannes festival, and still The plaguerecovery of a film by Zé do Caixão, a mythical figure in Brazilian horror cinema.
But there is more… holy spiderthat marks the return to the festival of the Iranian Ali Abbasi, or the Spanish animation unicorn wars, Alberto Vazquez.
