City of Salzburg – summer construction sites: That happened in the summer
While many Salzburg residents spent their holidays outside the city of Mozart during the summer months, the employees of the construction department continued to work intensively on the urban infrastructure. Civil engineering sites can be seen and felt, leading to obstructions here and there, but ultimately improving footpaths and cycle paths and renewing roadways.
“WRITING is written on the buildings of the city just as intensively as on our streets. External walls are being insulated, heating systems are being converted to renewable energy, barrier-free access is being created, roofs are being greened and photovoltaic systems are being installed,” explains City Councilor Martina Berthold. They thank both the people of Salzburg for their understanding of the temporary workers and the city employees for their dedicated summer work on the construction sites.
Here is an overview of the current summer construction sites:
Pedestrian and cycle paths, road renovations
- Connecting route: Leopoldskron-Moos elementary school to Glantreppelweg
The existing pedestrian and cycle path was renewed and expanded in two stages during the 2021 and 2022 summer holidays. It will be completed before school starts. This means that from the new school year, elementary school students can go to school or cycle safely on the developed path.
To increase the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and school children, construction is being carried out on Robinigstrasse, from Stadlhofstrasse to Schwarzparkstrasse. The project was developed in cooperation with water and nature conservation. Construction work began in summer 2022 and will continue until autumn. In a next step, the pavement in Stadlhofstraße will also be expanded on the way to school.
A central state cycle path runs along Fürbergstraße, which is also part of the city’s 2025+ cycle strategy. After the current Salzburg AG excavation work in Ignaz-Härtl-Straße and in Fürbergstraße (from the Sterneck crossing to Fürbergstraße No. 34A), the footpath and cycle path on the mountain side will be widened to 3.5 meters over a length of around 350 meters. The separation between the footpath and the cycle path is made by markings. Due to agreed conditions, no extension is possible in the area of Fürbergstraße No. 30. The implementation is carried out by Salzburg AG and the State of Salzburg with the support of the City of Salzburg. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2022.
- Hofhaymerallee roundabout
The former provisional roundabout at the intersection of Hofhaymer Allee / Friedenstrasse / Hellbrunner Strasse is now being structurally implemented. In addition to the new construction of the roundabout, the roadway will also be renovated, the cycle paths and footpaths will be made safer, the lighting will be revised and new green islands will be created. Completion is scheduled for the end of October 2022.
After the lines have been renewed in Bessarabierstraße (between Münchner Bundesstraße and Triebenbachstraße), the entire roadway is currently being re-asphalted for a period of 3 weeks. In the course of this construction site, the crossing area to Staufeneggstrasse was replanned. Areas were unsealed and transformed into islands of green.
From autumn, the south-west sidewalk on Stauffeneggstrasse (between Triebenbachstrasse and Bessarabierstrasse) will be widened to two meters and then the road surface will be renewed. The work will take around 8 weeks and will be completed in two phases.
school renovations
- Taxham Middle and Elementary School
The renovation of the facades of both schools started in mid-June. At the same time, about 170 windows were replaced in the middle school. The elementary school will have a rear entrance that has now also been equipped with a ramp and is therefore barrier-free. The construction work in the outdoor area will affect school operations until the beginning of October.
The total refurbishment of the school will take two years. In the first step, the interiors on the ground floor were equipped with new laminate floors, new lighting and new soundproof ceilings over the summer holidays. In addition, all windows and portals on the first and second floor were replaced. The facade and roof renovation as well as the heating conversion (from electricity to pellet heating) and the installation of a photovoltaic system will continue until November. School operations, which begin next week, will not be affected by the construction work. The “complete renovation” of the elementary school will be completed in the summer of 2023 with the installation of an elevator and the renovation of the gym and the sanitary facilities.
New recycling yard
The earthworks (demolition and excavation) as well as the canal and iron-laying work for the foundations and supports have largely been completed. The first reinforced concrete columns are currently being concreted. Completion of this is scheduled for early October. The steel structure is then erected. The roof construction and preparatory measures for the construction of a photovoltaic system will take place from the end of October.
