On Monday, September 5, the men’s basketball team of Ukraine, which won the opening matches of the European Championship against opponents from Great Britain (90:61) and Estonia (74:73), brilliantly played the third match of the group tournament. In Milan, Einars Bagatskis’ wards visited the Italian team, which recently qualified for the world championship in Riza (89:97).

At the beginning of the second quarter, the Apennines launched “long-range artillery” and broke away. But they did not “swim” to Bagatskyi’s four boys and even won the second part of the game with a difference of one point. In a word, Italy went to the long break, leading the score with a difference of four points – 42:38.
In the third quarter, our boys played even more aggressively in defense and tied the score – 57:57. In the last 10 minutes, Ukraine, to the disappointment of the stands, simply gave an encore, sensationally increasing its advantage to 11 points — 84:73.
Svyatoslav Mykhailiuk (25 points) became the most productive basketball player of our national team in the third meeting in a row. Achille Polonara scored the most points for the Italians — 17.
In other matchday matches in the group, Croatia beat Estonia 73-70 and Greece beat Great Britain 93-77.
Team standings: 1. Ukraine — 6 points (goal difference — +41); 2. Greece — 6 (+24); 3. Croatia — 5 (+20); 4. Italy — 4 (+6); 5. Estonia — 3 (-25); 6. Great Britain — 3 (-66).
In the matches remaining in the group, Ukraine, which guaranteed itself a place in the playoffs, will play against Greece (September 6) and Croatia (September 8). The four best teams from each of the four groups, who withdrew in the games of choice to determine the champion and prize-winners, will advance to the 1/8 finals. Teams from Group S will play in the first round of playoffs against Group D, which includes Poland, Israel, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Finland and the Netherlands.
Earlier, “FACTS” reported that the men’s volleyball team of Ukraine sensationally defeated the team of the Netherlands in the 1/8 finals of the World Championship.
