Land of mountains: Liechtenstein’s princely mountains
Documentary & report | Land of Mountains
Liechtenstein’s princely mountains
The Principality of Liechtenstein lies well protected between Switzerland and Austria directly on the Rhine. It is a country of contrasts: at 160 km2, Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world. The people of Liechtenstein don’t even have their own currency without an airport, without their own motorway. Payment is made here in Swiss francs. Even to be born & die in neighboring countries, because Liechtenstein itself does not have its own maternity ward. Doesn’t sound like much – but the mini state is a sly old man: not only that it is ruled by a prince who is considered the richest monarch in Europe. But the real treasure of the principality is its landscape and its rugged mountains: Liechtenstein is the only country in the world that lies entirely in the Alps. About half of the country is in the mountains. And if you like, you can hike through the whole country in just one day. To mark its 300th anniversary, the Principality gave itself, its residents and guests from all over the world a gift: the Liechtenstein Trail. A 75km trail that crosses the whole country. The former Liechtenstein ski star Marco Büchel visits the most beautiful places in the country and explores the centuries-old history of the principality.
