San Marino. Energy crisis, GDC appeal: “We need a path of responsibility”
“The advance of the cold season is giving priority to the demand for the energy emergency. An urgent question, regarding supplies and too high prices, for which the Congress of State is promptly implementing a short-term strategy, especially with regard to gas. This is a new plan which envisages being able to sign memoranda of understanding with Italy to guarantee the supply of gas and other energy sources ”.
This is how the reflection of the gods begins Young Christian Democrats on the topic of the energy crisis. “As we know, the price of gas has now risen to a record level that has not been seen for years. But this trend has profound effects on the real economy, from economic activities to household devices. In general, we can say that almost all utilities are powered by gas. But the most significant impact, in Italy and San Marino, remains that relating to electricity. In fact, gas is the dominant source when thinking about electricity production and this is the cause of the increase in this cost. The most significant indications come from the prices in Europe, also as regards the size of the problem: electricity now costs more than 600 euros per MWh, the average cost in the last decade has always remained between 20 and 30 euros per MWh. In the October tariff update, given gas prices, a further and substantial rise will also be inevitable for electricity.
As Young Christian Democrats we ask ourselves about the future course of the San Marino political debate. Where will this crisis take us? A prospective result is a double alternative as regards clean energy. First of all, the waste-to-energy plants that have been a reality in Italy for some time and we GDCs intend to continue this approach. As reported by a study by the Politecnico di Milano, waste-to-energy plants are safe, efficient and cutting-edge investments with emissions equal to only 0.03% (against 53.8% of commercial and residential combustion), for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Ipa ) is equal to 0.007% (against 78.1% of residential and commercial combustion) and for dioxins and furans it is 0.2% (against 37.5% of residential and commercial combustion).
Secondly, it is crucial to focus on traditional renewable energies, such as photovoltaics. However, this is severely limited due to the lack of energy accumulators which makes it impossible to retain the energy produced and not used during the day.
Faced with this scenario, it is necessary to undertake a political path of responsibility and studies so that our Republic can effectively and effectively fight the current crisis. We GDCs welcome the strategies, albeit limited to the short term, of the State Congress that families agreements with Italy for the supply of gas, in order to increase the spending increase of economic and San Marino operators. At the same time it will be the formation of a permanent work table fundamental for emergencies, whose function will be explained in coordination with the Italian institutions, from the point of view of energy supply for the current period of energy crisis and subsequent, from a perspective future, an evaluation of possible public investment alternatives, such as renewable energy “.
