San Marino and the independence of the Titan – The Saint of the day
In the place where the Basilica of San Marino now stands, part of the relics of the Saint found in 1586 are housed
Today 3 September San Marino is celebrated. Marino was a stone worker (cutter, stonemason). He was born in Rab in Dalmatia at the end of the 11th century. The Saint, with his compatriot Leo, came to Rimini to work on the expansion of the port. Marino and Leo at the end of the works both became hermits (Marino on Monte Titano) and Leo on Montefeltro (today San Leo). Both were on Christian preachers among scattered people.
The Bishop of Rimini Gaudenzio conferred sacred orders on them: the diaconate to Marino and the priesthood to Leo. Felicita, a Rimini lady, converted to Christianity by Marino, she was the owner of Mount Titano and made a gift of it to the Saint; she where she built a parish church. Many, following Marino’s example, imitated his virtues.
At the time of his life, the Saint said to the people he converted: ‘I leave you free, from one man and from the other man’.
These words were interpreted as a proclamation of independence of the place, both by the civil authority and by the ecclesiastical one. There is no civil or religious authority on earth to which the population of the Republic of San Marino accepts to be subjects.
It is for this reason that the patronal feast, which is celebrated every year on September 3, is one with the national independence day. San Marino died in the fifth century and its liturgical cult was approved by Pope Pius Vl. In the place where the Basilica of San Marino now stands there are some of the relics of the saint found in 1586. Some of the relics were donated to the island of Rab in Croatia, the birthplace of the saint. The cult of San Marino is very strong in the Republic of the same name.
In addition to being the patron saint of the Republic, San Marino is also the patron saint of stone cutters.
Happy name day to all readers who are called Marino.
For years Lapressa.it has been offering free and independent information to its readers without any kind of public contribution. Private advertising includes part of the costs, but it is not enough. This is why we ask those who read us every day, and follow us, to give us, if they believe, a contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of Modenese and Emilia-Romagna who read us every day, is essential.
