Cheapest city break in Athens: How much do the British pay for a weekend
Athens is the cheapest destination in Europe for a city break, as the cost of a weekend in the capital is lower for foreign Greeks than those paying in the traditional budget destinations of Eastern Europe.
That’s the conclusion of the Post Office Travel Money survey, which analyzed what British tourists will spend in 20 popular cities. As the survey found, prices in the Greek capital have fallen by 15% since 2021, the Guardian reports.
Estimated costs include two nights hotel accommodation for a couple, meals, sightseeing tickets and transportation. This “package” costs 207 pounds in Athens but 218 pounds in the second cheapest destination, Lisbon.
Next up are eastern destinations that are usually renowned for their low prices, such as Krakow in Poland (£219), Riga in Latvia (£220) and Budapest in Hungary (£221).
For the first time in the 15 years that Post Office Travel Money has been conducting this survey, a Western European city has been crowned cheapest.
Specifically, a British tourist in Athens will be asked to pay £38.96 for a dinner for two with wine, £89 for two nights in a three-star hotel and £7.79 for a 48-hour transport card.
Six of the cities analyzed have costs more than double that of Athens. These are Stockholm (£421), Paris (£423), Dublin (£436), Copenhagen (£456), Venice (£457) and Amsterdam (£593).
