Designer Päivi Raivio has been announced as the winner of the 2022 Helsinki Design Award. A joint program of the city Helsinki and Helsinki Design Week gives recognition to the designer or design team for making the capital of Finland a a better place to live.
During the summer, Raivio worked in an urban space experiment, which precedes the renovation of Ylä-Malme Market in Helsinki. Located in the Malmi suburb of Helsinki, the square is designed as a collection of oases that offer green areas and spaces for small-scale events and workshops. This initiative is part of Helsinki’s goal to create local activities throughout the city. Raivio worked together with residents and various community groups to renovate these facilities.

Päivi Raivio has more than a decade of experience in participatory design. He earned a bachelor’s degree in design and public art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. He also graduated with a master’s degree in Art and Design from the University of Art and Design in 2009. Raivio works as a freelance designer, artist and facilitator in the field of urban planning, service design, co-planning, site-specific planning. art and spatial planning. His work is mainly rooted in public space.
He also works with artist and designer Daniel Bumann in their shared office RaivioBumann. Together they developed Parklya brand of smart and urban furniture that encourages citizens to participate in their environment and promotes greener infrastructure.

The city of Helsinki’s press release states that “the goal of the Helsinki Design Award jury was not only to map successful products and services, but also to recognize the importance of processes in producing better everyday solutions for citizens.”
The award committee included Hanna Harris, the design director of the City of Helsinki, Taina Seitsara of Urban Tech Helsinki, and Kalle Toivonen, founder of the creative agency Måndag, Arto Sivonen, and Virva Haltsonen of Pentagon Design. Kari Korkman, founder and director of Helsinki Design Week, chairs the jury.
“Experimental culture can set big changes in motion if designers manage to combine ideas with the right timing,” said Korkman. “In this respect, Raivio’s work offers great potential.”

“Päivi Raivio has been involved in urban development in the long term and shaped not only the urban space around us, but above all development methods and processes,” adds Harris. “I am happy to present this year’s Helsinki Design Award to an established expert in citizen-oriented design.”
