Most fancy places in Sweden | Excellent travel guide
Last updated on September 2, 2022
While most of the tours to Sweden keep the focus on ancient cities, arctic landscapes and historical treasures, a large part of its heritage rests on luxurious sites and opulent areas. While the rest is pretty easy to plan, it can be hard to find fancy spots around Sweden, so check out our list of the most exquisite and grand attractions for your best Swedish experience!
Östermalm
One of the largest and most populous areas in Stockholm, Östermalm is widely known as an exclusive residential area with luxurious homes, rich Swedes and exquisite cityscape.
Although a little posh, Östermalm is still very visitor-friendly, and there are plenty of things to do here. If possible, try to visit the Dramaten, Sweden’s National Theatre, known for the most exciting performing arts. You can also take a guided tour backstage to see the amazing interior and wardrobes!
The Historika Museum is also an excellent choice if you want to know about the country’s history and development, as well as all the details and events that made Sweden what it is today.
If nothing else, just take a slow walk across Östermalm to enjoy the luxurious panorama.
Swedish Parliament
While people tend to imagine Swedes as very lavish and even proud people, they are actually very down to earth! The best example is probably that it is completely allowed and even encouraged to visit the Riksdagshuset, the Riksdagshuset, which is open to everyone, even when it is in session! In this way, people can participate in a debate, public hearing or study session.
All inclusive tours are also open to tourists between September and June if you want to learn about Sweden’s political history and see how the country is run. And even if this is not your primary desire, you can still go and admire the beautiful, rich interior and design.
Djurgården
Djurgården is one of the greenest central areas in Sweden, but at the same time perfectly combined with cultural places and fine establishments. The island outside the capital is filled with museums, entertainment centers and restaurants, making Djurgården one of the most beautiful places to see in Sweden.
Djurgården is the perfect day trip because it has lots of activities for the whole family, fantastic sights and an exciting background, which has been owned by the crown since the 15th century. Here you can visit the Vasa Museum, Grona Lund, the Abba Museum, Skansen and many more.
The center of Stockholm
When you are done admiring Djurgården, take back train to Stockholm and get ready to thoroughly explore the fanciest, exclusive cultural, aesthetically pleasing and fancy part of Sweden!
Dine at the opulent Fasching Restaurant not only for the very best meals and drinks, but also for the live jazz music and performances that take you back in time and create an aura of elegance and opulence.
As nasty as it sounds, consider going on Stockholm’s underground art tour on the city’s subway network! Most stations are named works of art and arenas in their own right, colorful yet terrifying with rock formations and futuristic designs. Although Sweden’s wealth in this case is not expressed in a traditional way, the fact that Stockholm’s stations are nowhere near typical perfectly shows the rich and ingenious minds of Sweden’s creators and artists.
If you’re visiting from May to September, it’s impossible not to attend one of the many outdoor parties in the capital! Well, in any case, highly recommended! There are plenty of fancy bars and clubs that still make you feel welcome even if you’re just on tour, and you get to mingle with the colorful Swedish community!
Drottningholm Castle
Well, how can we go on without mentioning at least one of the many luxurious palaces? Drottningholm is 45 minutes away from the capital and is considered one of the most beautiful representations of Swedish architecture.
Dating back to the 17th century, the castle now serves as the official residence of the royal family and is the most well-preserved castle in the country. Showcasing the blend of the beautiful Chinese Pavilion Palace, the palace gardens and the magnificent theatre, Drottningholm is the perfect example of 17th century European styles. It also has traces of natural development, which serve as evidence of all that was left after the various Swedish rulers.
For the best experience and high-quality knowledge, we suggest guided tours or an audio guide to help you navigate through the palace!
The Oresund Bridge
The Öresund Bridge, instantly recognizable from the first image, is probably the most stunning contemporary architectural wonder in all of Scandinavia.
Connecting the road and rail networks of the Scandinavian peninsula with those of Central and Western Europe, the Öresund is easily accessible from Malmö, the largest city in the Swedish county of Skåne, so definitely take the time to travel there!
But, more about the bridge. The Oresund is actually a mix of a bridge and an underwater tunnel, which is what makes it so unique. It was originally built to avoid the heavy air traffic around Copenhagen Airport and make it much easier to reach Denmark from Sweden. But even though its technical purpose is clear, many travelers choose the bridge only for entertainment. Which is completely understandable – who would turn down such a trip?
The project cost a lot of money, time and, most importantly, ideas, so it’s safe to say that the Oresund Bridge is definitely one of the most exquisite places on our list!
Enjoy the very best of what Sweden has to offer! Although this trip will cost you a bit more than, say, a trip to Central Europe, all the sights and experiences will be absolutely worth it. Good luck now, and onward on your Swedish adventure!
