Sha’Carri Richardson beats Olympic champion at Swiss meeting
She hadn’t raced since the US Championships in June, where she shockingly failed to qualify for the World Championships.
LUZERN, Switzerland — Dallas track sensation Sha’Carri Richardson once again demonstrates its world-class speed and causes a stir worldwide.
At a meeting in Switzerland this week, Richardson beat Jamaican Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah in the women’s 100 meters in less than ideal racing conditions.
The meeting took place despite cold, wet and -2.0 m/s headwind Richardson ran an 11.29beating the gold medalist Thompson-Herah from .01.
This was Richardson’s first race since she competed in the US Championships in June Shockingly, she failed to qualify for the world championships.
The Dallas native rushed during the 2021 US Olympic Trials after a 10.86. Shortly after this meeting, Richardson was suspended from competition for 30 days and missed the Tokyo Olympics. Her 30-day suspension ended before the start of the Tokyo relay competition, but USA Track and Field decided not to offer her a place.

The outcome of the Swiss meet shows that Richardson is still capable of competing with – and beating – the best of the best. Natural speed aside, competing successfully on the track depends on confidence and beating the defending Olympic champion will certainly show that.
