11-year-old girl saved thanks to the organ donation of Giada Penserini
Twelve hours in the operating room to save, implanting the liver of a donor on one kidney, one 11-year-old Ukrainian girlaffected by a severe and rare malformation to the biliary tract against which two operations in his country had not given any results. For the transplant of the user state Giada Penserini, the young woman from San Marino who died of injuries sustained in the tragic accident of 21 August last. The surgery was performed by connecting the hepatic portal vein with the child’s renal vein. She originally came from the Donetsk region, she had been hospitalized several times for infections over the past year and conditions had improvedwith the need for an urgent transplant.
Last May A medical team was sent from the Piedmontese capital and the case of the little girl was evaluated, thanks to the advice of the Liver Transplant Center of Molinette, Renato Romagnoli, and the director of pediatric gastroenterology of the Regina Margherita hospital, Pierluigi Calvo. Hence the decision to take her to Italy, hospitalize her at Queen Margherita and put her on the waiting list for the transplant. After two months, a compatible liver arrived. The organ was divided into two parts according to the Split technique: the smallest, the left, was implanted in a newborn at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome, while the largest part, the right, was transported to Turin. for the transplant from Romagnoli. “From a point of view it was a rather acrobatic intervention but we are very satisfied technicians. The liver works well about a week after the transplant – explains Romagnoli -. For the moment, no complications, the baby has been awakened and he resumed his duties and began to feed himself “.
“Parents are very happy and grateful – adds Romagnoli – they embrace us and understand two things: that Italy is an open country, that welcomes and gives and that allows a high level of care, because an intervention like this is at the forefront of the world.
