[Werbung] Side tour on the Gaisberg – on Petrol Friday
Always stay hydrated: on the Seiterl hike up our favorite panoramic mountain in Salzburg
Another lesson learned: Actually, the petrol Fridays “only” last until September 9th, 2022. But social media has revealed to us: There will be free driving days again for Rupertikirtag from September 21st to 25th. Kind.
Many paths lead to the Gaisberg. Some take the bus, some bike. Others walk. We count ourselves among the latter. On Petrol Friday we laced up our hiking boots again, packed a few readers and made our way comfortably up the Gaisberg. That means: We went on a hike with a lot of stops where we had a few beers. Everything in moderation, of course. You don’t have to overdo it. We came down for free with the Gaisberg bus – thanks to Petrol Friday. How we approached the whole thing is now here in a completely effortless short run.
A mountain tour in the municipal area – where is there something like that?
In the past, the old people always said: “You don’t get the same quality of life as in Salzburg, anywhere else” and we just rolled our eyes. Now we are the old people and the wheel of knowledge between generations kicks in because: “So a quality of life like in Salzburg, you don’t get that anywhere else”. In which other city can you go on a mountain tour with more than 800 meters of altitude difference without leaving the municipal area? Even!
Our favourite: Via the Kühberg to the Gaisberg
At the Gaisberg everyone has their own favorite route. Our favorite is the tour from Gnigl over the wild and romantic Kühberg. There is never too much going on on the shady trail, even on sunny days, and you will find the loveliest snack spot there.
Here you can find the GPS track of the tour on Outdoor-Active.
The hike started at the Gnigler church. From here you follow the yellow signs at Eichstraße 66 in the direction of Kühberg or Gersbergalm and the Gaisberg summit. Don’t be alarmed: The first part of the hike is quite steep and you start to sweat a lot. Mountain or trail running shoes with a good profile are worthwhile here. After about 30 minutes, the path flattens out, your heartbeat normalizes and soon after you reach a beautiful meadow, one of the most beautiful places to eat.
It then continues (always following the signpost) past the Gersbergalm in the direction of the Gaisberg summit. On the way there, after another steep section, you will pass the Gaisberg circular hiking trail. And again you have the choice: either tackle the last stage towards the summit, or walk along the Gaisberg circular hiking trail to the Zistelalm and enjoy the final beer there. Your decision!
Turn around, even if it’s no longer happy
The best thing about a hike close to the city is that you can decide to break off the hike almost at any time. Especially on the Gaisberg you don’t have to rush your way back, but get on the Gaisberg bus at any point faster – it doesn’t run mega often, but reliably and consistently. And: On Petrol Friday (until September 9, 2022), the return trip to the city is free.
After the exodus from the city is before the exodus from the city
We use the petrol Fridays almost to the end and go summer tobogganing on September 2nd, 2022.
We’ve been to the Dürrnberg before, but in winter and for skiing. This time we’re taking on the summer toboggan run and it’ll definitely be nice again. You can easily get there by train and bus and then we’ll see how we use our time in Tennengau.
Directions: Friday, September 2, 2022, first with the S-Bahn to Hallein and then with the 41 to Dürrnberg
Duration: Approx. 50 minutes in each direction, on the Dürrnberg as long as it suits us
Beginning: Friday, September 2, 2022, 1:21 p.m. at Salzburg main station
Costs: none, unless you want to eat something there, you have to pay for it yourself
