Portugal is about to ratify Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership
ANDm statements in Prague, upon arrival at an informal meeting of the defense ministers of the European Union, Helena Carreiras, who in July confirms today’s objective of the Government of Portugal to complete the ratification process as quickly as possible, reiterated that Finland’s accession Sweden to the Atlantic Alliance should be ratified by the Assembly of the Republic very soon, as a parliamentary vacation.
“I believe that there is a very close schedule, it is now in September for sure, and we will achieve this objective very quickly”, he said.
As proposed resolutions by the Government on the subject – approved by the Council of Ministers on 14 July – were given to the Assembly of the Assembly on 19 July with the parliament page, having been sent to the parliamentary committees for Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities and Defense National.
Since the last plenary session of the vacation will be on July 21, the proposed resolutions in question will only be able to be voted on from September, so the Government that this happens very soon.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Sweden and Finland — two applications for Russian integration of Ukraine — submitted an application for NATO membership on May 28.
After Turkey’s initial resistance, the NATO Heads of State and Government, meeting at the Summit in Madrid, officially invited Sweden and Finland on June 29 to become members of the Alliance.
More than 20 NATO countries have already ratified the accession of the two countries, the last one the United States, on August 3rd.
