João Sousa and Nuno Borges sign unprecedented for Portugal in Grand Slam tournaments
On Monday in victory of Nuno Borgeson Tuesday the João Sousa and, as a result, an unprecedented feat: for the first time in the history of the Portuguese, two men ensured qualification for the second round of the main singles table of the same Grand Slam tournament.
João Sousa and Nuno Borges are, respectively, the fifth and sixth Portuguese men in history to win in the main frames of singles of Majors, but never before US Open known triumphs of two players in the same week.
Nuno Marques was the first Portuguese tennis player to triumph in the main frame of a Grand Slam tournament, but the three victories of this dimension (Roland Garros nineteen ninety, australian open 1991 and US Open 1991) were not repeated by any compatriot. Then the same thing happened with João Cunha e Silva in Wimbledon 1993 and no US Open 1993.
The following victories only after two decades, but always “interspersed”: Rui Ax was the only Portuguese man to win the US Open from 2008 and in Roland Garros 2009, while Fred Gil did the same without company in the 2011 and 2012 editions of australian open. Then came the era of João Sousa, who celebrated for the first time in the main singles board of a Grand Slam tournament in australian open 2013 and, until this Monday, was the most recent Portuguese to debut in this type of triumph.
Despite being the first time that two Portuguese men have celebrated the second round of singles in the same Grand Slam tournament, in the past there have been occasions when a man and a woman have reached it simultaneously: Michelle LarcherdeBrito and Rui Machado did it in Roland Garros 2009, after Maria João Koehler and João Sousa matched the feat in australian open of 213 and that same year Michelle Larcher de Bri and João Sousa is also not allowed US Open.
