Fourth warmest summer in measurement history – salzburg.ORF.at
timeline
While the Rudolfshütte near Uttendorf (Pinzgau) at 2,315 meters above sea level is the wettest place in Austria today, meteorologists are reporting the fourth warmest summer since measurements began. Only 2003, 2019 and 2015 were even warmer – much to the delight of many sun worshipers who stayed at home by lakes or in the mountains this year instead of going to the sea.
The Salzburg Flachgau is one of the driest places in Austria this summer. According to experts, it brought 15 percent less rain than the long-term average throughout Austria. The sun was already dominating in June and July. It only eased off a bit in August with breaks in rain and clouds. In Salzburg, the most hours of sunshine were registered at the airport in the provincial capital.
Apricots, currants ripe particularly early
With a high of 38.7 degrees, this summer in Salzburg is the fourth warmest in 255 years, say meteorologists. Apricots and currants ripened earlier today, and the harvest could be brought in particularly early. Heat and drought also put a strain on trees and shrubs. The drought caused brown leaves in July and August. There is a total of six percent less rain in the country.
Aerial view of glacier melt
Those who head out to the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern in Salzburg and Carinthia these days will no longer recognize some of the corners. Enormous mass losses almost everywhere – in many places only bare ice without protective snow can already be seen. This state otherwise only occurs in September. Photos from a reconnaissance flight in July show the extent of the glacier melt – more on this in salzburg.ORF.at (27.7.2022)
