50,000 spectators will flock to Cologne’s Rhein-Energie Stadium on Wednesday evening (kick-off 8:46 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) to see the cup cracker between FC Viktoria Cologne and FC Bayern Munich. The small third division team fills up the large stadium in Müngersdorf, where the Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln is normally at home – and is not only looking forward to a warm shower of money.
Because the guests from Munich leave a part of the ticket proceeds to Viktoria. “After a brief exchange of letters and a few phone calls, President Herbert Hainer informed us that FC Bayern will waive 50 percent of the ticket income to which it is entitled,” confirms Viktoria Managing Director Eric Bock. The profit from the ticket income is shared between the clubs every day, the Bundesliga club now waives 50 percent of its half.
Rain of money thanks to the DFB Cup
On Tuesday, the people of Cologne could not yet quantify the extent to which this gesture would affect them. But one thing is certain: the margin should be significantly larger after deducting all the expenses incurred by the one-off move to the large stadium.
The cup is becoming more and more lucrative for Viktoria. For the first round alone, the DFB will transfer more than 200,000 euros to each participant.
