Sun protection films: It’s getting cooler in the Salzburg local railway
Sun protection films on the railcars of the Salzburg local railway reduce the temperatures for the passengers.
FLACHGAU. In the future, journeys on the Salzburg local railway will literally be cooler: In order to counteract the hot temperatures in the passenger compartments and thus further improve comfort for passengers and employees, the railcars of the local railway will gradually be equipped with sun protection films. This decision was preceded by a test operation that brought pleasing measurement results.
“The passenger compartments of the Salzburg local railway are not air-conditioned and unfortunately technically cannot be retrofitted with air conditioning. In order to counteract the high temperatures in the vehicle on hot summer days, we decided to equip the railcars with highly effective sun protection films. We want to and will continue to improve comfort for our customers and employees,” says Gerlinde Hagler, Head of the Transport Business Unit at Salzburg AG.
The sun protection films should reflect the sun’s rays and in particular reduce the effect of heat from thermal radiation. For this purpose, the protective films are attached to the outside of the windows in the passenger compartment, the door windows and the lower side window parts in the driver’s cab.
Temperature eleven degrees lower
The temperature measurements during a test operation in which sun protection films were attached to an existing vehicle have now delivered pleasing results: the surface temperature on the passenger seats and the storage tables was around eleven degrees lower than in a comparison vehicle without protective films.
100,000 euros for more comfort
“Based on this result, we will equip all vehicles with these sun protection films, which are hardly visible to the naked eye. In the budget for the coming year, we have made financial provisions for this measure, in which almost 100,000 euros will be invested,” Hagler concludes.
