Starlink has started sales in Norway
Starlink has started sales in Norway earlier than predicted. Users in the USA show the equipment on boats with good internet speed.
High-speed network
Starlink will provide good speeds and stable coverage in areas that currently do not have access to the internet. According to tek.no, the average speed for American customers last quarter was 105 Mbit/s down and 12 Mbit/s up. The signals are sent via satellite, which causes more delay than in fixed and mobile networks, but preliminary figures show that Starlink is faster than other satellite internet providers.
Starlink has such a small delay that it will be unproblematic to have a video conference.
First delivery to Norwegian customers
According to tek.no, Starlink customers have been sent connection equipment which is a small parabolic antenna with stand, power supply and a WiFi router. The equipment costs in excess of NOK 6,000. The monthly price for the internet subscription itself is NOK 1,049.
The subscription is locked to one fast location as standard, but for NOK 240 a month you can take the equipment with you. Then you can get internet signals wherever you are within the coverage area of Starlink. The latter is particularly interesting for boat owners who want access to the internet. In various discussion groups on the internet, there are many boat owners who have installed Starlink equipment on boats and have good coverage as long as they are in port or near land. This is Starlink equipment intended for motorhomes.
Could be a new everyday life for long-distance sailors
Starlink Maritime is outfitted for oil rigs, merchant vessels and large yachts. The establishment costs are a solid 10,000 dollars and monthly subscriptions from 5,000 dollars. Elon Musk has previously stated that it will be relatively easy to provide internet to a sailboat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This is a question from a sailor who wanted to be online in connection with teaching school-age children.
There are many good reviews of Starlink, and the customers seem to be satisfied. The rapid development, and now that we can buy Starlink equipment in Norway, means that there is hope that sailors can be connected to the internet in large parts of the world during 2023.
