Salzburg police without young worries – salzburg.ORF.at

Unlike in Vienna or Vorarlberg, the staff situation in the Salzburg police is not tense – the police emphasizes that. All positions and apprenticeship positions have been filled. Nevertheless, you want to do more advertising for young people.
Magdalena Ragginger has been the officer in charge of the police department at Salzburg Central Station since June. She is one of 1,850 police officers in Salzburg: “I really live my job and I like doing it. In fact, there were very few services that I didn’t enjoy going to.”
“We have enough applicants”
Unlike in Vienna, for example, every position in Salzburg is occupied – there are also several applicants for the police academy. 287 police officers are currently in training in Salzburg, and 30 again in September.
“We still have enough applicants – and as a result, there are also several police trainees for the available training positions,” says Salzburg police spokesman Hans Wolfgruber. “Nevertheless, it is the case that ten to 15 people leave the police force every year – some of them during basic police training, because personal circumstances may change or people realize that this career choice was not necessarily the right one. “
Magdalena Ragginger began her professional career in 2015 when she entered the police academy – a profession that fully meets her expectations: “For me, for example, the night shifts only have advantages: I enjoy it when I have the day off. The night shifts are also often busier. I can honestly say: that’s exactly what suits me. And the salary is actually quite good too – especially when you start young.”
staffing situation in the police force
“Can still compete with the police profession”
The increasing competition on the labor market is also noticeable in Salzburg, but comparisons with Vienna or Vorarlberg are inadmissible. In Vorarlberg, civil servants migrate to Switzerland and Liechtenstein for better pay. In Vienna, every fifth police officer will quit. “I believe that we in the state of Salzburg benefit from the fact that the economic and labor market situation is such that we can probably still compete with the attractiveness of the police profession,” says police spokesman Wolfgruber.
This is also the opinion of the staff representatives. Nevertheless, the search for new officers is becoming more challenging, which is why the police want to recruit more young people for the law enforcement service.
