Pareidolia and Art-O-Rama prove the vivacity of the city
At the end of summer, from the Friche la Belle de Mai to the Frac PACA, the rich program of contemporary art in Marseille shows the liveliness of the city. The two fairs Pareidolie and Art-O-Rama (until August 28) also prove the possible diversity of proposals.
Like every year, Martine Robin, the director of the Château de Servières, has succeeded in showing the different facets of contemporary graphic design. For this ninth edition of the fair Pareidolia14 galleries, 2 white cards (a tribute to Jean-Jacques Ceccarelli and the presentation of Polaris, the art center of Istres), 2 guest artists (Japanese Mayura Torii and French Jeanne Susplugas) and a video space (Jan -Philipp Fruehsorge) occupying intimate spaces on boulevard Boisson.
Favorites at Pareidolie 2022
A drawing for each visitor, such should be the slogan of the Pareidolie fair as the proposals are so diverse. Poetic drawings by Odonchimeg Davaadorj (Backslash gallery) with humorous inks by Jacques Lizène (Nadja Vilenne gallery), repetitive patterns by Maëlle Labussière (AL/MA gallery) with details drawn by Gilles Pourtier from the Becher photographs (gallery 8+ 4), from Reeve Schumacher’s graph pencils (Lhoste gallery) to Michel Dector’s monumental aerosol paintings on sheet (Laurent Godin gallery).
Art-O-Rama in 47 galleries
Coming from 18 countries, the exhibitors of the Art-O-Rama fair are once again playing the daring card by presenting numerous installations. But sculpture wins the prize with the museum proposal by Mark Dion (In situ gallery), the multicolored gorgonians by Hugo Schiavi (Double V) and, above all, the incredible stand with the heterogeneous compositions of Théo Massoulier. Here, paper money and a fossilized tentacle are played with colored glasses and elements from salvaged computers to become elegant sculptures in the style of De Stijl.
(Re)marked presence of paint
Like last year, we see the exponential presence of painting at Art-O-Rama. Among the pretty discoveries, the large abstract paintings by Nicolas Momein on the stand of the Ceysson & Bénétière gallery, the portraits of Constantin Nitsche at the O-Town House and the figurative compositions of Katharina Höglinger at the Wonnerth Dejaco Gallery.
Two Portuguese-speaking voices at the Frac
On the ground floor of the Frac PACA, the Luso-South African artist Ângela Ferreira has deployed a monumental installation around the colonial history of Portugal and the importance of radio stations in broadcasting the independence struggles in Mozambique. On the third floor, Muriel Enjalran and Martine Robin invited the Portuguese Ramin Guerreiro to imagine a project combining drawing, sculpture and photography. The result, very elegant, analyzes the links between architecture and the city and pays homage to Phyllis Lambert, the creator of the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal.
Eco-responsible glass at Cirva
The fifth edition of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès Skills Academy brought together 22 craftsmen, designers and engineers around glass. The final workshop took place at the International Center for Research on Glass and Plastic Arts (Cirva) in Marseille. This presents the results of this research based on recycled glass. For the section “From spirits to the spiritual”, it is the shape of the bottle and the transparency of the material that are studied here.
