More money for military and civil servants
politics
Approval for the plans comes from Salzburg that civilian and basic military servants should receive more money. Specifically, the Greens are demanding that the monthly payment for military and civilian service should in future be as high as the minimum income. However, the ÖVP attaches a condition to it.
The Greens and the ÖVP in the federal government agree that conscripts and civil servants should receive more money every month in the future. The Greens have in mind an increase to the level of the minimum income. Those who do military or community service should therefore receive 978 euros per month instead of the 362 euros basic salary that has been paid out per month so far.
“Finally raise starvation wages”
For the green state manager Simon Heilig-Hofbauer, it is high time: “An increase has been necessary for a long time, and it is more necessary because of the rise in prices and inflation. It is time to finally raise these starvation wages to subsistence levels.”
The Defense Ministry, which is led by the ÖVP, also says that there should be a massive increase in the pay for conscripts and civil servants. The prerequisite, however, is the approval of the Greens to increase army spending overall – to 1.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2027. Salzburg’s Green Heilig-Hofbauer is cautious here: “We need separate reforms in both areas, but you can certainly discuss that.”
“Basically” all parliamentary parties are in favor of more money for the army. The exact way is still to be negotiated.
