Drought in Portugal is expected to last until November
Half of the reservoirs in Portugal have water reserves below 40%, but the situation could get worse: Brussels estimates that the dry November situation lasts until.
Those who have cattle will, quite possibly, have to continue to buy supplements for feed and the difficulties in planting will continue, especially in winter.
Farmers are not like structural changes have not yet been made to increase the water storage capacity of water.
“The appeal is made with money, which invests in the efficient use of society for the whole of society, there is no water, the farmers do not produce food”, said Luís Mira, from the Confederation of Farmers of Portugal.
At the beginning of the week, reserves had declined in 12 of the country’s 61 river basins and more than half were below 40%.
Barlavento, Lima, Cavado and Sado register the lowest values. In the case of the Touvedo reservoir, there is only one week, the lower storage capacity is 8%.
Until November, the situation should not improve, at least so says the European Commission. The drought across Europe could become the worst in 500 years and Iberian Peninsula will be one of the most known areas of the continent.
The critical levels have already led to the implementation of measures such as the choice of swimming pools, suspension of irrigation and reduction of consumption in tourist developments. But more will be announced soon.
