VARTA ÖTV Youth Championships: The 12-year-old Anna Pircher shows off in a big way
The 12-year-old Tyrolean Anna Pircher proved her exceptional talent at the VARTA ÖTV youth championships in tennis with her triumph in the higher U14 age group. ÖTV sports director and Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer also took off his hat to the impressive performance.
INNSBRUCK. At the VARTA ÖTV Youth Championships, which were played at the Tennis Club IEV MED-EL until the weekend, more than 250 young tennis talents in the U12, U14 and U16 age groups fought for medals. The performance of 12-year-old Tyrolean Anna Pircher particularly stood out. The Pirchers, who are still eligible to play in the U12s and who were allowed to play in the U14 age group thanks to a so-called green card, secured the title against their competition, who were up to two years older. She explained her strength and superiority as follows: “I believe that I have a great advantage because my family and my coaching team support me so well”.
Jürgen Melzer enthusiastic
“In most cases, the favorites prevailed individually,” said ÖTV sports director and Davis Cup captain Jürgen Melzer, summing up the past tournament week. “You have to take your hat off to Pircher, of course. Her victory in the under-14s makes it clear what a great talent she is,” said the ex-ATP top ten man in singles and doubles. Marion Maruska, ÖTV sports coordination & young talents and Billie Jean King Cup captain, also emphasized Pircher’s coup: “It’s impressive that Anna Pircher won in a higher age group. I am happy about the high level of play and a great week.”
Youth Championships
The VARTA ÖTV youth championships are an important benchmark in junior tennis. After the successful start of the tennis youth championships in 2016 in Klagenfurt, the renowned junior tennis tournament is held in a different federal state every year. “It was a great event, very casual and very pleasant that everything was played on one facility. That’s what makes the youth championships so special when all age groups are on the same course,” including Melzer.
