Malta Guinness kicks off a national plastic cleanup campaign in Agbogbloshie
Producers of Ghana’s largest non-alcoholic brewed malt drink, Malta Guinness have launched a national plastic clean-up and awareness campaign in Agbogbloshie in the Greater Accra Region.
The campaign will be community focused and represents a bold leadership move from the multi-award winning malt brand in driving plastic sustainability, conversations to spur action and concrete actions to tackle the issue of plastic pollution.
“Most plastic packaging from consumers is used only once and is then sent to landfill or ends up in sewers, illegal dumps, and on our beaches. To combat this, Guinness Ghana has signed an important partnership with Coliba Ghana to fund 10 plastic bottle buy-back centers in Accra and Kumasi to collect post-consumer plastic bottles, to stimulate and increase collection and recycling rates,” Director of Corporate Relations, Sylvia Owusu-Ankomah noted in an interview.
“We are a trusted brand that connects with purpose, and we equally believe that this campaign supports the government’s efforts to ensure that our communities are clean and rid of pollutants such as plastic .”
The Director of Marketing and Innovations, Estella Muzito pointed out that the commitment of Malta Guinness towards the campaign is multidimensional.
“As part of our journey to strengthen our leadership position as the brand that inspires a world of good spirit and can-do, Malta Guinness is leading this plastic collection sustainability agenda. with the sensitization of the communities in the form of this plastic collection activity in Agbogbloshie Community.”
She added that “We started this with a ‘train the trainers’ exercise with 10 women in the community to create awareness about the impact of plastic and the various uses that plastic waste can be put to. “
“Alogboshie is home to us and with a long and shared history with this community dating back to the sixties, we thought it relevant to start this campaign here and extend it to other areas around the country.”
“This campaign is not a one-time event. Malta Guinness will be activating this commitment and the change in attitude in the communities where we exploit, make and sell our brands. We may soon enter a community near you, so watch out for the Malta Guinness plastic awareness/cleaning campaign caravan,” said Mrs Estella Muzito.
