A storm system with downpour swept through Slovakia. However, more waves of storms await us
A storm complex swept through Slovakia on Monday, bringing very intense precipitation and extraordinary lightning activity. However, the storms are not over yet, on the contrary. More waves of storms await us.
After a rainy and stormy weekend, the beginning of this week again brought numerous storms and intense precipitation that swept through almost our entire territory.
In the afternoon, a storm complex formed over Hungary, which advanced over southern and eastern Slovakia and progressed towards the northwest, passing through our entire territory with the exception of part of western Slovakia.
The advancing complex brought increased wind, which broke trees, especially in the east in the Košice region, where a few of them fell on the road. However, the most damage was caused by intense rainfall, which flooded several roads.
The village of Nová Vieska on the Podunajská nížina was under water, as a total of more than 80 mm of rain was recorded there. The storms brought from 20 to 50 mm of rain, while the most fell in Gbelci, where they recorded up to 89 mm of rain.
The number of lightning discharges produced over our territory is also very interesting. The storms produced a total of 26,676 lightning strikes, with most of them striking in the 3 hours when the storms were at their most intense.
We will not rest from the storms yet
For those who have embraced sunny and warm days again, we do not have good news. Slovakia is expecting more waves of storms these days. A cold wavy front will break up over our area.
Stormy weather will hit us again today, especially in the northwest. It will be numerous and local storms. Another storm system may form over Ukraine today, which will approach eastern Slovakia in the afternoon, so storms may also hit us from the east today and sweep across our entire territory.
During storms, 10 to 40 mm of rain can fall, locally even more. Wednesday will bring numerous storms again. They will mainly affect central and western Slovakia, so you have to prepare for stormy days.
