The third act of homophobia in three months
This is the third time in the space of three months that the municipality of Avignon has reported an act of vandalism against a symbol of the LGBT community. Last May, it was the one located rue de la République which suffered the same fate, then, in June, it was the LGBT center, La Langouste à Bretelles, which suffered damage.
The municipality takes the opportunity to recall its support for the LGBT community. “Insults and intimidation have no hold and should not make us give up in our daily fight for equality. »
Why is the rainbow flag the symbol of the LGBT community?
The idea of a flag in the colors of the rainbow symbolizing the LGBT community was born in 1978 in San Francisco in the mind of Gilbert Baker, a former soldier turned artist. “I liked using a natural phenomenon to represent our sexuality and human rights,” he told Free Europe/Radio Liberty in 2013.
Originally, the flag had eight colors: pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple. A few months later, the banner loses its pink color, the fabric of which is regularly out of stock. In order to keep an even number, indigo is also set aside. The six-color rainbow flag made its first appearance in November 1978, during a march in memory of San Francisco City Councilman Harvey Milk.
