The 14,928 spectators at the Ornano stadium did not regret the trip on Saturday August 20, 2022. Not only did the clash between SM Caen and Guingamp keep all its promises in terms of intensity and spectacle, but the locals also made a real show of force. In an incandescent atmosphere, the Malherbistes won 4-1 after having conceded the opener.
The party ignites from the start
The Guingamp goal, signed Barthelmé after a good cross from Livolant (0-1, 6′) quickly set the tone. Guingamp tried to drive home the point in this first strong moment, but Thomas dismissed Livolant’s strike (12′) in front of his line. From then on, it was the Malherbists who took the bull by the horns. After a try by Essende (16′), Ntim converted with an acrobatic return the deflection of Thomas on a corner (1-1, 18′).
Based on an atmosphere of (very) great evenings, the people of Caen have surfed the wave. Mendy snatched the ball from the feet of a defender to crucify Basilio and give his team the advantage three minutes after the equalizer (2-1, 21′). The weed attacker, author of his second but of the season, was a constant poison for a Breton defense very quickly in the woods. He passed a few centimeters from the break on a cross from Abdi (34′) and continued to weigh heavily on his opponents.
Mandréa already decisive
To reach the locker room with a goal lead, resulting in Caen’s domination, he had however had to make a superb save from Mandréa on a header at the far post (40′). Caen had had the clearest opportunities but their lead remained fragile.
To avoid being scared, they who had been trapped a week earlier in Dijon (2-2), the Normans attacked the second period foot to the floor. Essende (48′) and Daubin (51′) heated Basilio’s gloves, before number 99 found the fault with a superb volley close to the post (3-1, 52′). A nice reward for Samuel Essende, who marked his first but with Caen.
A spectacular second half
Much more consistent with the ball than in their previous matches, very attractive in the imposed rhythms, the locals sought to worsen the score by Brahimi (56′) or Abdi, stopped by Basilio (73′). It was finally Jeannot, on a penalty obtained by the Tunisian international, who would close the score shortly after his return (4-1, 73′).
Do not think, however, that the En Avant was resigned. The Bretons logically tried to get back into the game and it took a very big Mandréa to stop them (60′, 82′). It’s only the fourth day of Ligue 2, it’s only the third victory, but Stade Malherbe hits hard. He is the only leader in the standings before the Bordeaux match on Monday.
