NSSLGlobal delivers satcoms to Gothenburg of Sweden – Digital Ship
NSSLGlobal has partnered with SOIC Ship Management to bring the latest in satellite communications technology Sweden’s Gothenburga full-scale working replica of an 18th century sailing ship.
Spanning 300 years of technological development, the vessel is a hybrid of historic and modern, with its traditional wind-powered sails alongside the latest IT and satcoms enabling remote diagnostics, technical support and communications.
The Sweden’s Gothenburg was the most advanced merchant sailing ship in the 18th century and is now the world’s largest ocean-going sailing ship. It was rebuilt as a full-scale 1:1 model of the original Swedish East India Company ship that sank in 1745. The ship has just begun a historic two-year voyage around Europe to Asia, ending its journey at the end of 2023.
The ship has been upgraded with the latest 21st century communication and navigation technology to ensure the safety and comfort of the crew on their long journey. The ship will act as a trade and maritime ambassador for Sweden.
In addition to keeping its crew safe and entertained during the 18-month journey, the vessel will use NSSLGlobal’s communications network to feed back its daily position, check weather reports and upload the latest images, videos and news. With around 600 sensors on board Gothenburgthe technical staff on board and ashore can use NSSLGlobal’s VSAT IP@SEA to monitor critical operational systems including temperature, pressure, fuel and water levels.
NSSLGlobal’s partnership will see its VSAT IP@SEA broadband communications deployed throughout the voyage alongside its renowned 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC) providing remote technical support and remediation. Local engineering support will be available in ports as well as at NSSLG’s global sales and service offices in Europe and Asia.
“Although Gothenburg resembles an 18th century ship, it is essential that we have the latest ship communication technology on board to ensure the safety of our professional crew. We are grateful to NSSLGlobal for providing their world-class satellite technology and airtime on this landmark journey around the world. In addition, this relationship is complemented by the commitment of both companies to work sustainably and we will sail under wind power as much as possible”, commented Lars Ringnér, ship director for SOIC Ship Management.
Kristian Ryberg, general manager, NSSLGlobal Scandinavia, said: “The Gothenburg is a remarkable project that combines the pride of maritime history with the best of modern maritime technology. With its own roots in the Scandinavian shipping industry, NSSLGlobal has been providing the latest satellite and navigation technology to the maritime industry for over 50 years. We are therefore honored to provide the satcom technology to assist the ship on its journey with 21st century communications capabilities. Our VSAT IP@SEA services always provide connectivity and speeds suitable for data-heavy applications so that the crew not only stay in touch with their loved ones but also serve business needs”
