154 shells, dating from the Second World War, were recovered from the Seine last week, France Inter report Friday August 5th. It was divers from the river brigade of the Department of Public Order and Traffic (DOPC) of the Paris Police Prefecture who fished them out.
It is an operation carried out “in coordination with the deminers of the central laboratory of the Prefecture of police which allowed this discovery”, confirmed to France Inter the commissioner Matthieu Thibaut, deputy to the head of the division of the specialized operational units of the DPOC. The operation lasted two days, quai d’Austerlitz, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, on a surface deemed to be the equivalent of a football field.
It was magnet fishing enthusiasts who discovered the first shells, before the intervention of the river brigade. Present in large numbers, the shells forced the agents to recover them in several stages. The parts were devoid of an ignition system. ammunition, not “several dozen cartridges were also recovered”, says curator Matthieu Thibaut.
Magnet fishing consists of placing a powerful magnet at the end of a rod to recover precious or historical metal objects and debris. A note from the Ministry of the Interior, dating from 2019, specifies that it is “considered illegal” if it is practiced “without authorization from the administrative authority”. In the event of discovery of a suspicious object, the police officers of the river brigade advise against handling it and invite you to call for help quickly.
