University of Innsbruck: From autumn there will be five more courses
With the winter semester, five master’s degree programs and one additional degree program will start at the university. The master’s courses in the field of philosophy of religion, peace and conflict research and drug development are offered in English, specializations in electrical engineering, antiquity and computer science in German.
INNSBRUCK. Despite the pandemic, the number of students continued to rise in 2020 and 2021, contrary to the expected trends. Currently, 28,000 students are active in Innsbruck in at least one of the 130 subjects offered. One reason for this trend is the constantly growing and updated range. For example, the University of Innsbruck has been offering a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering together with UMIT since 2018/19. started based on that starting in autumn, the master’s degree in electrical engineering. “This course is the first in western Austria to offer continuous academic training in the field of electrical engineering,” says Clemens Zierhofer, head of the Institute for Mechatronics at the University of Innsbruck.

The course is an in-depth philosophical training to deal with basic ideological and religious questions of the human being and explores the interfaces between religion, society and politics. “With this course, we convey the competence to examine the phenomenon of religion in its various aspects from the point of view of the individual philosophical disciplines, but also in dialogue with other sciences,” explains Winfried Löffler from the Institute for Christian Philosophy. The redesign of the is also in English Master’s degree in “Peace and Conflict Studies”. It now offers a well-founded scientific education in the field of peace and conflict research at an international level, and it also includes practice-oriented teaching units in teamwork and development, diversity & identity, inclusion and communication in order to reach interested students in international fields of activity in the best possible way. Also in English Master’s degree in “Pharmaceutical Sciences” is a cooperation between the University of Innsbruck and Med-Uni. It trains experts who understand the development of new drug processes in their entirety and who can successfully apply them in their later professional environment thanks to their strong practical relevance. “It is particularly important in the context of the implementation of this new course that, in addition to competent lecturers from the two universities, numerous experts from the pharmaceutical industry and the regulatory authorities could be won as lecturers for this international master’s course, which significantly contributes to the attractiveness of the course Study steps,” explains Jörg Striessnig, pharmacologist at the University of Innsbruck.

The Institute for Ancient History and Ancient Near Eastern Studies combines in the new Master’s degree “Ancient Worlds” historical, philological and extended perspectives on the past. “In this course, students are encouraged to take a global historical perspective on the past and on the production of knowledge. This enables them to recognize Eurocentric perspectives in the sciences in general and they can deal with them critically, and they also acquire historical knowledge about gender relations in antiquity,” explains Kordula Schnegg, head of the institute.
High-performance computers for science
That Extension course “Scientific Computing” is the third extension course after computer science and entrepreneurship and is combined with bachelor’s, master’s or diploma courses in other subjects or taken after they have been completed. It provides a scientifically sound education in the basics of Scientific Computing. In this advanced course, students deal with mathematical modeling and the use of high-performance computers to answer scientific questions from research, industry, business and society.

Registrations for bachelor’s degree programs that are not subject to an admissions process are still open for the coming winter semester 5th September online possible, for master’s programs online application ends on October 31st.
