Milan: library in the subway at Porta Venezia
A Milanin the station Porta Venezia undergrounda express library sweetens the journey of business men in suits, grandparents hand in hand with their grandchildren, fast-paced girls at their first summer outings. With her eyes resting on the words written on paper, she goes from one end of the city to the other. And as stated in the press release of the Municipality on the occasion of the inauguration of the urban library: “Even a short journey can become a journey in the company of a book”. Here she is first intelligent library in Milan: the library in the subway. It is similar to the machines they sell snackwater and soft drink. However, it delivers books and other products from the publishing world: audio books, comics and DVDs. The project, co-financed by the Lombardy Region in collaboration with ATM – Azienda Trasporti Milanesi, allowed the installation of a completely robotic space-culture, connected to the library system of the city. In practice, the library in the metro is a counter without staff, it is a machine that satisfies the desire of reading on the spot: without waiting.
The catalog, being in dialogue with the comings and goings of books in Milan, it is always up to date. The service is accessible every day – during the metro opening hours – and is aimed at many members of the literary loan network (it will register, in the early days and at least until the end of the summer, only one loan at a time). For city residents it is sufficient to scan a QR code and access a page where you can register for free and in real time (with SPID or electronic identity card). Of course, this smart library will not be an isolated case. In fact, it is the pilot project of the largest: Biblioespresso – started in 2020, when the administration began to design the city based on the needs of the neighborhood (inspired by the now known “Paris of fifteen minutes” by Hidalgo). In addition, ATM and the Milanese bibliote metteche, for some years, “Milan has been working together on the program to be disposed of”: the initiative to promote reading ebook free offered by publishers, in the common belief that the book represents a tool for culture, updating, but also for socializing and inclusion.
