The World Ice Hockey Championship is to be held in Switzerland in 2020, but all efforts and plans were thwarted by the coronavirus pandemic. However, the organizers did not leave in vain, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will offer them as a replacement for the championship in 2026.

While two years ago it was supposed to be played in Zurich and Lausanne, in four seasons the hockey elite will gather in Zurich and Fribourg.
However, this time the largest city in the country of the Helvetic Cross did not offer the Hallenstadion, which was supposed to be played in 2020, but the Swiss Life Arena, which has been under construction since 2019. It should experience its first severe test this October.
The Swiss Life Arena is located approximately 7 kilometers west of the center of Zurich. The stand will serve as a home for the ZSC Lions club and will have a capacity of 12,000 spectators.
Thanks to the modern infrastructure, the stadium will have a multifunctional use. The total cost of construction is estimated at approximately 170 million Swiss francs, which is almost 175 million euros.
The composition of the basic groups for the 2026 World Hockey Championship will be known only after the championship in 2025. So we do not yet know whether Slovakia will also play at this stadium, or whether it will reach the group in Friborg. However, given the capacity of both stadiums, it is likely that he will play in the medal matches in Zurich.
