The letter from Pedro do Carmo, the Lusa agency had access, was recently sent to the administrations of the airlines Ryanair, EasyJet, EasyJet.
“How do they [companhias aéreas] not be forced” to fly Beja, but “they must be seduced and sent to the potential [do aeroporto]that’s what I did”, the socialist deputy explained to Lusa.
Pedro do Carmo also said that the letter gave a “grade” to the three companies “of the potential, virtues and added value of flying” for the region.
“Beja Airport may not be an alternative, but complementary to Lisbon and Faro airports in this period of high season, when our airports are sold out”, he added.
In the letter, the Alentejo deputy stressed that, given the “evident exhaustion” of Lisbon Airport, “the absence of a strategy to enhance the infrastructure of Beja” is unacceptable, managed by the company ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal.
The PS deputy defended, in the letter, that Beja Airport is used as an “alternative” to Lisbon and Faro, examples such as Frankfurt Hahn and Munich West airports (both in Germany) or Oslo (Norway), all the most a hundred kilometers from the final destination.
Beja Airport “is 181 kilometers from Marquês de Pombal, in Lisbon”, in addition to the Alentejo being “a region rich in leisure activities, culture, adventure and beaches”, it is also “very close to the Alqueva dam, the largest artificial lake in Europe”, he highlighted.
In addition, the continuous Pedro do Carmo, Beja Airport “has a passenger terminal, and maintenance of cargo aircraft”, will remain “prepared for all types of operations with a level of efficiency”.
The PS deputy also referred that the Alentejo infrastructure is “directly linked” “to the vast network of highways that connect the city of Beja to all parts of the country”.
In this context, “it faces the lack of appreciation of Beja Airport by those who manage it and should improve even more as the country’s airport infrastructure”, Pedro do Carmo asked airlines to consider “its use as an alternative to destinations” that already context they use in Portugal, “with evident gains” for their operation.
“I am confident that there will be ‘feedback’”, concluded the PS elected to Lusa.
