They are on average 140 to come, every morning, to have a breakfast, a shower or to seek advice from professionals at number 6 of the boulevard Saint-Michel in Avignon. To ensure reception, ten volunteers are needed at the time of the opening. Problem: for a few weeks, the association suffers from a shortage of volunteers.

Fewer volunteers, fewer services
“Between the reception, the doctors, the marauding, you have to normally around 100 volunteers for the center to operate normally. Today, we are 70,” warns Christelle Boumaiza, head of team life at Secours Catholique d’Avignon.
A team that is reduced to thirty people, concretely, this translates into more effective closures, for lack of being able to provide a quality service. The raid was not carried out due to a lack of human resources. In August, the local will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as from August 8 to 15.
New schedules that will continue in September if the situation does not improve. If the head of Secours Catholique is optimistic, nothing is less certain. Because the lack of volunteers is not just a summer episode. For Christelle Boumaiza, the problem is deeper. “I could be wrong, but I feel like it coincides with the end of the health crisis period. Life to resume, people can go out again, travel. Some have been able to find a job, ”she says cautiously.
In the meantime, a poster has been posted on the front door, which has made it possible to recruit a few people. No prerequisites are required to be part of the team. “Anyone can be an actor of mutual aid”concludes the one who has been part of the association for 7 years.
