Art for everyone: These works have an impact on the city’s advertising pillars
Since 2014, advertising pillars have been artistically designed during the festival – this year for the first time with a theme. Seven analogue poster art projects, one work for the modern version of the City Light Column and three digital works can be seen in the city of Salzburg until August 30, 2022.
SALZBURG. The test was not easy: 22 entries to the competition were discussed by the jury in detailed discussions.
Ultimately, eleven winners were chosen, who addressed the annual theme “Community?!” in a critical and pointed manner as usual. and, as a “gallery of the street” in the urban space, invite you to discover them.
Artistic competition since 2014
“The city of Salzburg went through a phase that was a bit heated, controversial or disoriented when it came to art in public space,” says Dagmar Aigner, head of the culture, education and knowledge department, looking back on the time when the art advisory board was created to provide the city with expertise and advice on art.
The “art advertising pillars” competition has been held since 2014. “We were curious how that would work when the topic was given for the first time, in this case the topic ‘Community?!’, says Elfrid Wimmer-Repp, Chairwoman of the Salzburg Art Advisory Board, who was delighted with the submissions and says : “The relevant and current events of the time were actually all addressed in some form – in very precisely worked out works.”
Works are colourful, quiet and critical
The works contain references to the loneliness of the elderly, pet cults from the Internet or protests against the war.
In front of the city library in Lehen, for example, the work “Gedankenstille” features a dark green armchair in front of the column, while Johannes Kubin follows the cats and Karin Fisslthaler shows a three-dimensional collage of protest signs from worldwide demonstrations against the Ukraine war.
Creating access for art
In Salzburg, more than 250 advertising pillars in public spaces provide up-to-date information from cultural life. Eleven artistic projects will be presented until August 30th. These advertising pillars were designed by various artists who were successful in the renewed competition.
The works of art were awarded 1000 euros each. The production and implementation was carried out by Progress Advertising, which again provided the digital city lights (digi screens) and city light columns in addition to the classic advertising columns. Two poster art projects can be found at the same time in the city of Hallein and in Grödig and enable art to be enjoyed not only in urban but also in rural areas.
