For the first time in Portugal, a doctor donates a kidney to a stranger
The 70-year-old doctor Domingos Machado, who worked as he did 47 years ago, and is currently retired, in the specialty of Nephrology, made an unknown kidney. This is the first case in Portugal.
Speaking to SIC Notícias, the doctor said that he was “no longer a doctor” and put himself “in the position of a citizen who gives an organ to another person”.
“On top of that, having a very good general health – which is, fortunately, my case – and also having both rinses working symmetrically”, said the professional, highlighting what is necessary to make this gift.
“When I realized that I was in a good condition, then, I stopped being a doctor [e] I put myself in the position of a citizen who wants to give an organ to someone else”, he said.
Domingos Machado went through a clinical and psychological way of realizing if there were no other risks to the clinical procedure, making the transplant to take place, successfully, at Hospital São João Associates, in Porto.
Estadiva was possible that two patients from the patient list were retired from the wait that, later, Domingo Machado left the hospital with three senses of “mission” gives.
