To protect the Stuiben Falls: Canyoning is severely restricted
The natural paradise of the Stuiben Falls increases among the many gorge hikers. Canyoning will be severely restricted from October.
BRIETENWANG/REUTTE. If you want to get a picture of canyoning, you only have to go to the Stuiben Falls. Here at the outlet of the Plansee, gorge hikers will find ideal conditions.
Should leisure activities such as canyoning be restricted to sensible places?
8100 entries in 2021
You don’t have to wait long for a group to come. In 2021, 8100 entries were counted, in July 2021 alone there were over 3000! The gorge hikers, “packed” in wetsuits and equipped with helmets and ropes, can be well observed from the nearby hiking trails, the number of which is increasing rapidly.
protection for the environment
This development is being followed closely by those responsible. Now people are reacting: In order to protect the sensible environment, but also to meet the increasing criticism of this excessive leisure activity and to reduce the number of participants, CANYONING WILL BE RESTRICTED. But not immediately, but only from October 2022, as the tourism association reports.
35 outdoor vendors
The Stuiben Falls are currently served by more than 35 outdoor providers. It is mostly entrepreneurs from the Allgäu and the Garmisch area who guide their guests through the spectacular gorge.
Hiking and recreation area
Back then, the Stuiben Falls were prepared by the communities of Breitenwang and Reutte, the Reutte Nature Park Region Tourism Association and the Reutte power station as a hiking and local recreation area. In the meantime, however, the recreational value is massive.
Right of use has been leased
Now they are stepping in by leasing the right of use for canyoning from the communities of Breitenwang and Reutte to the Reutte mountain guide office run by Jörg Brejcha from Höfen. From October, the mountain guide office will manage the access rights and monitor compliance.
Number of inspections is limited
The number of ascents is explicitly reduced by about 2/3. At the same time, the boarding fee is also to be increased significantly. Access for local school groups, for example, will still be possible.
opinions
“In addition to the feedback from the population, the figures collected make it clear that the number of canyoning tours must be significantly reduced to protect the much-desired natural area and the other user groups,”
explained Herman RuppChairman of the TVB Nature Park Region Reutte.
“The regulation of visitor frequency is in line with nature-oriented quality tourism and fits perfectly with the concept of sustainable tourist use of the Plansee area”,
shows the mayor of Breitenwang Hans-Peter Wagner satisfied with the solution found for the Stuiben Falls.
