Resumption of work rue Thiers in Avignon this Monday, traffic disrupted
A new phase of work begins this Monday, August 1 in Avignon. The festival barely over, the city launches a new stage of the requalification of rue Thiers. The work will last four weeks, until August 26, and traffic in the neighborhood will be very disrupted throughout this period, since rue Thiers will be closed to traffic in both directions.
The closure to traffic concerns a hundred meters, between the streets Saïn and Philonarde and up to the rue d’Amphoux. The town hall is planning a diversion, in particular for go to the Les Halles car park. You will then have to take rue Philonarde, then Bonneterie to reach the back of Les Halles and rue Petite Meuse. Another subtlety: during this work, rue Paul Saïn changes direction and will no longer allow you to go up from rue Thiers.
The city also promises that deliveries will be kept and businesses in the area will remain open. A passage is also provided for people with reduced mobility. The street will then reopen gradually from the end of August, first in half-road until mid-September. The complete completion of this phase of work is scheduled for February 2023.
With this project, the city of Avignon continues the redevelopment of the intramuros, as it has already done in place Saint-Didier or rue Bonneterie. This time again, it is planned to put the road and the sidewalks at the same level, for a better sharing of space between cars, bicycles and pedestrians, giving priority to those who circulate on foot. The city also wants to fight against heat islands: it plans to install light-coloured coverings, a drinking fountain and plant about fifteen trees.
