July is the sunniest month since measurements began
July of this year was the sunniest month in Switzerland since measurements began. In Geneva, the sun shone for 373 hours, as reported by the weather service SRF Meteo on Sunday. This July was the sunniest month ever at more than 20 measuring stations.
The previous record came from the year 1911. At that time, the sun shone in Bern for 370 hours in July. However, the meteorologists are dealing with statistical records. Modern measuring techniques differ from today’s devices.

In July 2022, the solar radiation was above average throughout Switzerland. Several stations in the flat regions of the north of the Alps and Valais have measured more than 300 hours of sunshine, according to the MeteoSwiss state weather service.
In some places it was the sunniest July since the homogenized sunshine measurements began in 1959, for example in La Chaux-de-Fonds NE, Neuchâtel, Sitten VS, Montana VS, Lucerne and Lugano TI. It was also the sunniest July since measurements began in Basel in 1886. (sda)
