A10: traffic jams and convoys for a good 100 kilometers
Traffic
The start of the summer holidays in southern Germany brings the expected traffic jam on the Tauernautobahn (A10) southbound on Saturday. In the morning there were traffic jams or slow convoys along the entire length of Salzburg – more than 100 kilometers. That means hours of delays.
According to the Ö3 traffic service, there were delays around 11 a.m. along the entire A10 in Salzburg. On the 70 kilometers between the border crossing at Walserberg (Flachgau) and Flachau (Pongau), the additional travel time was around two and a half hours. The traffic jam continued after the Tauern tunnel – in front of the St. Michael im Lungau toll station. In the meantime, the police repeatedly activated block handling due to the heavy traffic – for example at the Ofenau Tunnel near Golling (Tennengau).
“Strongest weekend so far in terms of traffic jams”
You should allow for half a day of additional travel time, said ÖAMTC traffic jam advisor Clemens Gstöttner on Saturday morning: “There are many breakdowns, we are on duty every few kilometers.” There would also be rear-end collisions. Many holidaymakers did not expect that the traffic volume would be so heavy either, says Gstöttner: “It is currently the busiest weekend so far this year in terms of traffic jams.”
If the cars are not standing, they are driving in convoy traffic at around 20 km/h, said Gstöttner.
Traffic jams also on the return journey
Traffic jams also formed in the opposite direction during the morning: Shortly after 11:00 a.m. block handling was activated northbound in front of the Katschberg tunnel. According to the police, she should stay upright all Saturday.
In front of the Walserberg (Flachgau) motorway border crossing, the waiting time when leaving Austria at around 11 a.m. was around 45 minutes.
Columns also in Bavaria
There are also severe delays on the Bavarian A8 motorway on the way to Salzburg: between Traunstein and the border at Walserberg, drivers had to calculate around two hours more travel time between Traunstein and the border at Walserberg around 11 a.m. according to Ö3.
Departure lock activated again
In order to limit the traffic diverting from the motorway to the parallel federal highways, the exit barriers were reactivated this weekend: At Puch, Hallein, Kuchl, Golling, Pfarrwerfen, Pongau, Hüttau, Eben, Altenmarkt and Zederhaus only those drivers are allowed to exit who have a destination in the region.
