After waiting for three years due to covid-19 restrictions, young adults in Sweden were finally able to meet again and spend a weekend at Västerängläger. The long-awaited reunion took place May 25–29, 2022. The dates were planned to coincide with Ascension Day, a holiday in Sweden celebrating the ascension of Jesus Christ.
“As a result of the covid-19 pandemic and church closings, young adults began to ‘disappear’ from the church scene,”
reflected Linda Schwartz, one of the organizers. During the lockdown,
“Church was slowly replaced by other activities. And when churches reopened when restrictions were lifted, some people didn’t feel the need to attend.”
Västeräng’s youth camp was organized to revitalize the faith of young adults and remind them
“their worth and value given by God.”
Dejan Stojković, guest speaker and director of the Ministry of Youth for the Trans-European Division (TED), shared inspiring messages
“full of energy and humor”
challenge participants to
“be a follower of Jesus and not just a fan”,
Schwartz reported.
How much God loves and values each person was the thread woven through Stojković’s messages.
“I am worthy, and the church needs everyone,”
said one of the participants, reflecting on Stojković’s words.
“God helps us in every situation, and we can trust that he is there for us.”
said another.
“I am worthy just the way I am”
said another young adult.
“There is a real need to feel loved and accepted by God. We hope this message will continue to inspire young people.”
Schwartz remarked.
The Västeräng youth camp was planned by young adults for young adults.
“The holiday atmosphere was filled with laughter, conversation and fellowship,”
Schwartz commented. Activities such as a mystery night, campfire games and relaxing sauna sessions made for an enjoyable weekend for all. And there was even something for those on a tight budget! By joining the cleaning crew and making sure the camp was ready for the next group, campers received a fee reduction.
“Young people came not only from Sweden, but from the USA, England and New Zealand as well. We are already looking forward to our next event and hope that many more will join.”
Schwartz said.
