Nisevic impressed by Spartans’ progress after Velez Mostar masterclass
The coach of Hamrun Spartans Branko Nisevic praised the character shown by his players as the 2021 champions of Malta beat Velez Mostar, of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1-0, to reach the third round of ‘ UEFA Conference League qualification.
Brazilian striker Jonny grabbed the all-important goal early in the first half that gave the Spartans a 2-0 aggregate victory and a place in the third qualifying round of a UEFA club competition for the first time in the history of their club.
It was far from a comfortable night for the Spartans who had to fight with all their heart to overcome the severe challenge offered by Velez who produced a much more aggressive challenge than the first leg.
But the Hamrun players held firm to suppress the opponents’ efforts and achieved another prestigious result in European football.
“My greatest satisfaction is the fact that we managed to win both legs against Velez Mostar without conceding a goal,” said coach Nisevic to the Times of Malta.
“It is a remarkable feat when you realize that we have achieved this with a new squad of players. It is not easy to assemble a new group of players in just a short period of time. But the players seem to have settled well together and more importantly accepted the team’s style of play.
“So to me, it’s no surprise that we got some good results.”
