‘The Malta Education System Should Incentivize Educators Who Embrace Inclusivity,’ Says the Minister after Mario Mallia was fired
Malta’s education system should always incentivize educators who embrace inclusive and innovative principles, said Education Minister Clifton Grima after the termination of a headmaster in a Catholic college.
“The educators who promote these principles should be encouraged in their work as these are the same principles that our society should always embrace,” said Grima to Lovin Malta.
Mario Mallia was recently fired from his position as Headmaster and claims that his mandate was terminated due to the introduction of inclusive measures in the Catholic school. The school has denied the claimsand insisted that it was the result of “various managerial and procedural issues”.
Mallia’s decision to step down after 16 years as headmaster has sparked a flood of outrage on social media, from former students and colleagues to other academics, popular opinion leaders and even TikTok star Henry Galea.
Grima did not avoid commenting on the specifics of the case, while noting that catholic schools are independent and do not fall under the responsibility of the Ministry for Education.
He said however that there are of course relevant laws that govern the termination of employment.
The Malta Union of Teachers he also came out against the dismissal, stressing that he will no longer work with the school while calling for the resignation of the board of governors and the rector.
