Tens of thousands of Lufthansa ground staff laid down their work in Germany on Wednesday. A total of 1,000 flights will be canceled, affecting 130,000 passengers. Salzburg is also affected with two canceled flights.
The machine for the flight at 7.10 a.m. and that at 2.10 p.m. will remain on the ground on Wednesday. The Lufthansa strike affects two important connections for Salzburg Airport to Frankfurt, one of the most important international aviation hubs, says airport spokeswoman Susanne Buchebner.
“The cancellation of these two Frankfurt flights is more than inconvenient right now, in the middle of the festival season. Especially since the Vienna route was discontinued, we have no alternative for passengers in the Lufthansa network. This will probably mean that many affected passengers will switch to Munich,” says Buchebner.
20,000 ground staff go on strike
The union is kicking out 20,000 ground staff and wants to use the strike to put pressure on wage negotiations. After all, logisticians and technicians are responsible for aircraft being able to take off at all.
Even without a strike, Lufthansa had to cancel around 6,000 flights this summer alone. The strike is expected to last until 6 a.m. Thursday. At the beginning of August, the union and Lufthansa want to continue negotiations.
