Smart City: Goods transport with robots in Switzerland
Tunnel to the airport by 2031
The aim of the tunnel construction is to relieve traffic throughout the country. The freight tunnels are to be carefully integrated into the landscape and the populated area. CST is currently looking for hub locations along the first section, which is scheduled to open in 2031. With a branch from the main tunnel, the route should also include the airport. At the beginning of June, CST agreed to have signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” with Flughafen Zürich AG (FZAG). FZAG has been involved in CST since 2019 and is to participate in the project with the construction of a logistics terminal building.
CST achieved another milestone in the realization of the project with a potential analysis, according to which the connection of the cantons of St. Gallen and Thurgau in Eastern Switzerland would have proven to be economically promising. According to the CST, the economic and ecological advantages could also be seen for Romandy, the francophone part.
Parcel lock for Zurich
CST started a pilot project with the city of Zurich earlier this year that is intended to reduce traffic even before the tunnel opens: the “Salübox”. There will be deposit areas for parcels at four locations in the city, for which CST will organize a central collection. In Switzerland, there is already a milk box for depositing smaller items – an additional compartment in the mailbox that cannot be locked. With the Salübox, CST will further develop and supplement this concept.
