FHI: Norway will probably get the new vaccine against monkeypox
Norway expects to receive doses of the Danish smallpox vaccine, which is now approved for use against monkeypox, during the summer, according to FHI.
– Although the vaccine is now approved for use against monkeypox, it is not currently available in Norway, but we expect to receive some doses later this summer, writes Elisabeth Astrup, doctor at the Institute of Public Health, in an email to NTB.
On Monday, it became known that the Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic’s smallpox vaccine has been approved for use against monkeypox by the European Commission.
The approval also applies to Norway due to the EEA cooperation.
FHI is in the process of finalizing the advice on how the doses allocated to Norway should be used. There is a shortage of the vaccine worldwide, and the EU countries have chosen to distribute the doses among themselves based on their population.
– We have not yet received an exact delivery time from the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), which is responsible for distribution in Europe. When we get it, we will also know exactly how many doses we have available, writes Astrup.
