Turkey calls Sweden’s interim accusations of terrorist propaganda from the PKK/PYD/YPG
ANKARA
Turkey’s foreign ministry called Sweden’s interim charges in Ankara for the PKK/PYD/YPG terrorist propaganda held on July 21 in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, diplomatic sources said Saturday.
According to the ministry’s sources, Turkey’s strong reaction was also conveyed through initiatives before the Swedish authorities in Stockholm.
Türkiye reiterated the expectation that the perpetrators of the action would be identified, the necessary legal and judicial measures and concrete measures should be taken against the background of the commitments registered in the trilateral memorandum signed between Finland, Sweden and Türkiye last month at the NATO summit in Madrid.
On July 21, supporters of the terrorist group PKK/YPG/PYD held a demonstration with propaganda banners from the terrorist organization.
Sweden and Finland formally applied to join the transatlantic alliance in June, a decision spurred by Russia’s war on Ukraine. But Türkiye, a longtime member of the alliance, expressed objections to the membership bids and criticized the countries for tolerating and even supporting terrorist groups.
A trilateral agreement signed between the countries in June stipulates that Finland and Sweden will not provide support to the YPG/PYD, the PKK’s Syrian offshoot, or the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), and said Ankara provides full support to Finland and Sweden against threats against their national security.
All 30 standing NATO allies must approve any expansion.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the European Union and the United States and is responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.
FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the failed coup, which left 251 people dead and 2,734 injured. Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
