New sanctions published – Russian gold added to the list of import sanctions
The EU has ordered new sanctions against Russia. These sanctions expand and specify previously imposed sanctions as well as new regulations on their implementation. The sanctions include a ban on the import of Russian gold into the EU.
On 21 July 2022, the European Union imposed new sanctions on Russia in response to its attack on Ukraine.
The new sanctions expand and specify export sanctions for products that strengthen Russia’s industrial capacity and high technology and contain new regulations on their implementation. As an enforcement authority, Customs’ tasks include the implementation of import and export sanctions agreed at the EU level.
The new sanctions include a ban on the import of gold and refined gold products from Russia to the EU. The penalties also apply to jewelry and goldsmith’s and silversmith’s items. However, passengers may bring such products if they own the products and the products are not intended for sale.
Gold is one of Russia’s biggest export products after energy. In January-May 2022, no gold has been imported from Russia and no gold from Russia has been imported.
